Something happened with my mom Sunday. She was OK Saturday, but Sunday, she woke up from her nap, and couldn't remember how to use the phone. She couldn't talk right, and she can't remember words for things. I took her to the hospital, and have spent the past two days and nights there. I am just here at home for a while, and will likely be there for another several days. I am very worried about her, and the doctors still do not know what is wrong with her. It came on very suddenly, and looks like a stroke, but all the tests found no evidence of a stroke. The doctors can't find any reason for this problem yet... IDK what happened.
Please send any positive energy in her direction. I hope that she clears up soon.

Small strokes don't leave trace evidence behind you'd normally see. I can do something but it's not much. I can't fix brain damage.

Interesting news. The doctor says he doesn't think she had a stroke... this after running every imaginable test. However she has developed diabetes, and he says that is what we were seeing. I think he might be right, cause she's cleared up almost completely. I appreciate all your efforts. I think they really did help. She improved markedly very soon after I posted that, and she's been getting steadily better ever since. She got a good night's sleep last night, and tonight I will get to sleep in my own bed, and she's fine to stay at the hospital by herself. She's practically back to normal, while if it had been a stroke that severe, this progress would have taken months. Thanks everyone.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. =/ My mom has diabetes (I think every woman in my adoptive family either has it or is at extreme risk for it) and hers is very manageable, especially with the right diet.

I would have suggested a stroke myself, but I've only witnessed a stroke one time before in my life, and my grandmother didn't lose her memory of how to work things. I'm glad she is doing better, and best wishes that she will stay on a course of a close to full recovery back to who she normally is.

They still are not sure if it was diabetes, or what they call a TIA, or possibly even a slight stroke, but whatever it is has cleared up for the most part. She seems fine, and I have come home for a visit at least. I am so worn out from sleeping on that recliner for over a week. Anyway things are better and I am going to take a nap.

So she's developed diabetes but they're not sure if that was the cause? Will they be able to tell you once she's released? Enjoy your rest...

TIA is a Transient ischemic attack. health.google.com/health/ref/Transient+ischemic+attackIt's sort of a mini stroke that does not leave lasting damage. IDK... she seems a tiny bit more forgetful than she normally is, but that could be anything. LOL Really overall she seems fine, and she seems to feel better than she was before. She's been home since Thursday afternoon, of last week, and the doctor said we would never be sure what happened cause whatever it is has stopped happening, and none of his tests show a thing. Maybe she was healed... who knows but at any rate she's fine now, and her dibeties is well under control with the pills, and proper diet. I just checked on her and am back home. It is so good to be home, and it was nice to take a nap in a real bed today... for the first time in two weeks. Tonight I sleep like normal people LOL I'll still have to go out there two times a day to check her blood sugar, but at first I had to test it four times a day, and it was just sensible to stay there at that rate, plus at first she was so weak and tired she didn't feel steady walking aorund. Now she's back on her feet, and getting around exactly like she was before. If anything it seems like she's moving faster now. Anyway this is over for the most part, and I get to go to work tomorrow, weather permitting. Kim

Mom has had some sort of relapse. I think it is possible that both incidents were caused by an anti-biotic called Augmentin. I suspected a possible problem with the pills when I took her to the hospital the first time, but I became convinced of the stroke and dibetic theories. A couple of weeks ago I took her to the doctor for an ingrown toenail, cause the doctors said now that she is a diabetic this is suddenly a big deal. The doctor gave her Augmentin again, and I did not catch that this was the same med the other doctor gave her. Really I'd been convinced the med had nothing to do with her need to go to the hospital. Now I am relatively convinced that this is the source of the problem. She's not doing well at all. She won't eat but a bite of anything, and says it all tastes like salt brine, she cannot even force herself to down more than a tiny bit of food at a time. Even worse she has spells of being just nuts, and unlike before she doesn't recognize that she is being crazy, evil, or downright bizzare. She's been just mean about a dozen times in the past week. IDK what to do. I am litterally afraid of what she might do or say. She's said a lot of really hurtful things to myself and Devine. She's expressed suicidal thoughts, and said she might just not eat till she dies... and honestly if she doesn't improve she probably will. IDK what to do. I cannot afford to put her in a home, and I will look after her if I have to, but I really really wanted to get a job... need a job. Need the money. IDK what I am going to do. Really she is just plain nuts. I mean she is OK over half the time, but you never know when she is going to fly into a rage over some small thing... or nothing. I am just coming unglued. I am taking her to the doctor tomorrow. IDK what the Doctor will say or do... I have no clue how this would be treated, but I hope they think of something. Kim

I think taken her to the doctor is the best thing you can do right now. Tell her doctor how you feel about what has been going on and your theory as to why, is all i can really say. Can't really add much insight to help you hun, sorry. T.T

Refuse Augmentin, even change in dose. Her reaction is to the medication itself, not the dosage or strengths. Most doctors will realize this, but not all..unfortunately. Her acts of mood swings is a sign of sever depression and suicidal thoughts, but due to her mood swings she's been quite vocal about it. Inform the doctor of ALL of this, and you should get a change in medication. Should the doctor try to keep her on the same medication, refuse it.
But above all, TAKE HER BACK TO THE DOCTOR. Stick to the same doctor, get a 2nd opinion when you have doubts, assuming your mother's (or yours?) insurance doesn't limit you to an HMO or PPO.

Well I did as you said. It was generally good advice. I went to the doctor with Devine, and we told her how mom was acting.
This morning I took mom, and the doctor acknowledged the augmentin was the problem... but then she started trying to say that the appitiite problem was something else. She ran a test to see if she had the bacteria that causes ulcers. If that doctor had ever had an ulcer, she'd know that what mom was experiencing was NOT ulcers. Ulcer's HURT... burn like fire... like drinking gasoline, and drain cleaner. Anyway the first test said it wasn't so she ran another and came to tell us that she was putting mom on not one but two different antibiotics... I tried to argue, but she assured me it would not do the same thing. I was very very skeptical, but I took the scripts to the pharmacist, and he said that the two antibiotics would have interactions that would cause liver failure. He showed me the side effects of both drugs, and I saw that loss of appitite was on the list of one.... What was this woman thinking.... I mean IF she did have that bacteria, she'd probably had it since she was a kid. Why treat it now, considering it had nothing to do with what is going on now! IDK if that doctor thought she'd just kill mom, or if she didn't know or what, but he said he'd try to call the doctor and find out why she did that. I told him that he could if he wanted, but I definitely did not want the meds. At any rate. She did pull mom off all her meds except one, and I intend to keep it that way as long as possible. If she has any more problems we will get a new doctor.
It's funny but after I took up for mom, and told her that we weren't getting the meds and why, and that we wouldn't go back to that doctor, she immediately got better. She ate a good bit today. We talked and settled our differences, and she seems to feel better. She's not acting whacko anymore, and I just think the fewer meds with her the better. I told her that unless she had some serious life threatening illness, worse than the side effects of this med. I would not want her to take any antibiotics period, for a long time. Especially since she is not sick anymore.
