Well this board was feeling a bit neglected, and seeing as I rarely post anymore I might as well leave something of worth. This is the first hand account of what unicorns are, made by a unicorn with the aid of other unicorns, for the non-unicorn.
What a unicorn is:
-A four horned being
I (or rather they/we) mention two horns instead of one, which goes against human documentation. What most humans fail to recognise is that we are the owners of two pairs horns. The first two are on our head, the second two are in our souls. The spiral of which we are so prized is really two joined into one, a representation of the inner peace we all have, though some of us cannot reach it without guidance. Male and female energy, peace and love, hate and war, they are all the circle within us. The horn in our soul is much too complicated to address right now, though we can at a later date if you wish.
Why did the unicorns disappear?
Disappear? We never left this world? Just because you cannot see us does not mean we have left. We are rooted in your souls, we are the love you spread, the healing you give to our Mother [Earth].
What is the unicorn's job?
We have no job in your sense, but we do have desires. We are not unlike humans in that respect, we wish to further our bloodline (sex), protect our livelihood.
What is your livelihood?
To heal. To wage war on sorrow. Offer us up should you ever need the flighty wisdom of cloven hooves beating on foggy ground. [AKA, if you are in need of help in a battle within yourself, a unicorn will always be there to lend a helping...back if you need it]
I recall reading about not-so-peaceful unicorns. Unicorns who would stab the immoral, the liars. Unicorns who would attack "just because". How does this fit within you peace and love?
We do not enjoy being stereotyped. As said, we are much like our human kin, how else could we understand them and the healing process so well? That said, not all unicorns feel the need to take it upon themselves to better humanity. Some would rather be left alone, to their own herd and their own devices. Should you encountered such an unwilling being, please respect them and leave them alone, at one time or another they must of contributed something.
Are unicorns only beings of light?
Yes and no.... Remember the horn of four souls. The horns on our head is the light and dark intertwined to create something new and beautiful, harmonious if you will. We come in all shapes and sizes, and yes, even other elements. It pains us to enter into the space of the being we wish to help if their element is unnatural to us (think of a water unicorn helping a fire-typed person) A lot of unicorns do prefer earth-centered situations though.
(Please forgive this part, it is difficult to translate an emotion)
The two within the soul.... They are called horns in that they react and remain of the same purpose, but they have no real shape. They are melded to the soul of any and every living being, that sort of kinship you can feel with anything often stems from that. Being said, this is the most important horn of all. It's your seeing eye in dark times.
Is there anything else you'd like to say before this conversation ends?
You cannot expect yourself to love everyone, nor for everyone to love you. You can expect yourself to set the path to better those who would not look for it themselves, even if you cannot force them to walk it. That is all we do, lay the foundation and point you in the right direction.

Please note that I haven't been active in the astral for months, my element, energy, and most power got taken right from under my nose, and I'm just now picking myself up. Which is why this is very short and vague IMO. Still, it's nice to have something new, and thanks to the unicorns (never did get their names), who helped. Especially the one gentleman I was "snarky" too.
