This was taught to me by a guide of mine. It is a technique for balancing out emotions using the four main elements (earth, air, fire, and water). For this you need to remember the basic properties of each element. Basically that earth and water are cold (earth is dry, water is wet) and that fire and air are hot (fire is dry, air is wet).
In order to do this, you must first pick out your emotions individualy (this can be difficult. Do as best as you can.) It sometimes helps to do this in "layers". That is to pick out one emotion and deal with it, then peel away the others, addressing them one at a time. This should be done in some form of meditation (however you choose to meditate is up to you. I just sit down, close my eyes, and try to clear my mind while controlling my breathing.)
As you single out your emotions, you will notice that each one has certain properties. For example fear and sadness are usually cold, anger is hot, etc. It will probably be a little different for everyone. This is where the elements come in. The idea is to balance or "cancel out" the undesirable emotion with the opposite element. I'll use fear for an example because it seems, to me at least, to be the easiest to pick out and explain. Take the fear and look at it seperately, feel it seperately from your other emotions (this may make it seem more intense at first. Be prepared for that.) Then warm it up, burn it off with fire energy (it may help to visualize this.) You should feel a warmth, and your fear will just...dissipate.
The same can be done for other emotions as well. Generally this would be done to get rid of (instead of burrying) negative emotions. (I would, however, look at the cause of the emotion first instead of simply doing away with it without a thought). This should natually increase the positive emotions within yourself.
*I should note that if you are unused to working with elemental energies you should be careful at first. Some of the energies (fire most notabley) are very intense.*
